139 : Mike Ganino - Culture of Clarity
Monday May 21, 2018
Monday May 21, 2018
Mike Ganino is obsessed with culture. He breathes it and lives it, proven by his keynote motivational speeches and his fascination with improv theater. His experience in hospitality has let him grow iconic brands, and now he’s turned to aid people in understanding how a culture can run a company.
His book, Company Culture for Dummies, has hit the shelves! Check it out!
Mike Ganino - Stories by Employees Matter
Mike gained his extensive knowledge about company culture from his first-hand experience in working with different companies and also different franchises of a single corporate umbrella. He has learned through his many engagements that culture differs from one location to another, from one room to another.
These smaller units, microcosms, oftentimes work off the company handbook. The employee-guest experience, which is what sticks and resonates to customers, always drives this culture. The company story, therefore, ultimately banks on your employees.
“Your company is actually all of the stories your employees tell.” - Mike Ganino
In the long run, these stories of experience will impact your brand more than anything else that you do.
Caring and Clarity
Showing how you care for your employees from pre-onboarding down to their every day with the company will help them engage. A sense of caring may come from a casual text message to welcome a new hire or from letting your employees in the know of how the business is actually faring.
“There’s the ability to create a sense of caring no matter what kind of culture you have.” - Mike Ganino
This sense of caring does not have to be deviant from your company’s brand and culture. People need to feel like they’re needed and that they matter. You can only achieve this if you go out of your way to foster clarity in every aspect of your business, which will naturally breed a caring culture.
Final Four
1. What have you done to stand out in business and in life?
“To be inexcusably myself and to be okay being that comfortable with people.”
2. What advice would you give someone to stand out in business and in life?
“If someone else was sharing you, what were they saying about you? You should double down on presenting that side of yourself to everybody as much as you can."
3. What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
“The idea of getting really clear about what you want.”
4. How do you want to be remembered?
“I want people to remember that I gave them hope by giving them simple things they can do to get better and then I helped them have a little bit of fun with it.”

Monday May 14, 2018
Nathan Hirsch is the remote hiring expert and Chief Executive Officer of FreeeUp. Together with his solid and passionate team, he manages over a thousand remote freelancers from every corner of the world. His company has risen to become one of the most reputable freelance hiring agencies, serving as a bridge to ensure that clients and freelancers find the right fit for them.
Nathan Hirsch - From Seller to Freelance Hiring
Nathan began his entrepreneurship as a seller in Amazon but ultimately discovered the enjoyment derived from interviewing people on a daily basis. With his love for hiring grew a love for building remote teams and meeting all kinds of people. To continue doing what he loves, he created a marketplace where talented and committed freelancers are made available for clients from anywhere in the world.
“If you’re only hiring internally, you’re just limiting yourself to the talent around you, maybe the talent in the city next to you as well.” - Nathan Hirsch
His willingness to go the extra mile by building a culture that is appreciative of diversity in ideas and perspectives has greatly helped him in his freelance venture. These welcome differences have succeeded in expanding his company’s horizons, reaching more people of different backgrounds and needs.

137 : Jeff Haden - Act to Motivate
Monday May 07, 2018
Monday May 07, 2018
Jeff Haden wrote his way up. He’s a man who can teach us a thing or two about putting plans into perspective and embracing the not-so-unique process towards success. A contributing editor to Inc., he’s done differently by sticking to a model and learning from the pros.
His book, The Motivation Myth: How High Achievers Really Set Themselves Up to Win, has made it to the best sellers list of New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Amazon, helping thousands of people in working to achieve their goals.
Jeff Haden - Comfortable Being Uncomfortable
Introverted, Jeff admits to being terrible with complimenting people. He knows he needs to break out of that shell of inherent shyness, and he’d thought to work on it by committing to a “compliment challenge.” All day long, he’d paid people compliments whenever they made eye contact with him.
It was an enriching experience, albeit no easy feat.
“How cool is that... that you can walk around and actually make a small difference in other people’s lives?” - Jeff Haden
This one-day challenge has become a habit, almost second nature. To be comfortable with being uncomfortable is something that everyone needs to learn at one point or another, and it comes in handy when the mere thought of acting on a plan, whether big or small, seems too daunting.
Motivation is Everything
Jeff proclaims that he’s a big procrastinator, and a lot of people can surely relate to feeling stuck when you have yet to start. It's even more difficult to focus on what’s in front of you when you’re conditioned to keep a laser eye on the end result.
But Jeff believes that no matter how difficult the process may look, getting things done leads to the actual motivation that you need to gain more success.
“The hard way is usually the way that works.” - Jeff Haden
Action leads to motivation, and breaking in that glove will always require some effort.
Final Four
1. What have you done to stand out in business and in life?
“It’s getting things done."
2. What advice would you give someone to stand out in business and in life?
“Be the best person at your job.”
3. What is the best advice you received?
“Shut up. You’re not as smart as you think you are.”
4. How do you want to be remembered?
“I was an average person who worked hard, and tried hard, and got to accomplish things that were not necessarily average.”

136 : Billy Gene Shaw - Entertain, Educate and Execute
Monday Apr 30, 2018
Monday Apr 30, 2018
Billy Gene Shaw is known as the Facebook marketing guy, having founded the advertising agency that is Billy Gene Is Marketing Inc. Owning and living the word itself, he has risen through the ranks by being a little bit crazy, ultimately making it his mission to disrupt the educational system and offer the kind of teaching people deserve and will get them the skills they need in order to grow their business.
“Sell or be sold.” - Billy Gene Shaw
Billy Gene Shaw - I Am Marketing
Billy started off like anyone else, trying to kick his company off the ground (while staying in his mom’s). When a brand name did occur to him, it wasn’t some genius moment. It took realizing the up-and-coming director Tyler Perry’s strategy and adopting it to his own.
“Nobody can take my name and take it away from marketing. It is what it is.” - Billy Gene Shaw
With what he does tagged to his name, he was able to create waves in the marketing world. His outrageous videos of movie parodies, ingeniously titled, “The Lone Wolf of Advertising”, “00GENEIUS”, and “The Greatest Adsman” are certified attention-grabbers, setting in stone his most prized ability as a marketer and salesman. He’s not different from everybody else but honest and real, which translates into his work.
The Trifecta for Success
In order to make a name in marketing, he stuck to his three-step scheme: Entertain, Educate, and Execute. He has long acknowledged the need to get attention in order to sell a business. His silly videos tickle his prospective clients, whose curiosity then grows to a height that compels them to learn more about him and what he does.
“I know as a marketer who’s selling people on the idea of using advertisements to grow their business, I need to do the same thing for myself.” - Billy Gene Shaw
And so his agency evolved, taking on the mission to educate people how to build their own business. His school, G.E.N.E.I.U.S., has helped entrepreneurs beat even the brightest of minds through investing on and honing their skills.
Final Four
1. What have you done to stand out in business and in life?
“Own video. When people think of Billy Gene Is Marketing, they always go to some entertainment video. They know a lot about me. I’m transparent. I hold nothing back.”
2. What advice would you give someone to stand out in business and in life?
“Get the skills. Period. That’s all that matters.”
3. What’s the best advice you’ve received?
“Make it happen.”
4. How do you want to be remembered?
“Giving all types of people, of all different races, of all different incomes the ability to live life on their terms.”

Tom, like Jesse, has owned minor league baseball teams. He got started in the mid 80's when he woke up one day and decided he wanted to own a minor league basketball team. At the time, Tom had lost almost everything he had and it didn't seem particularly realistic but he made it his goal but he knew there was a team for sale in Rockford IL, in the CBA. "The [business] tool I use the most is listening." - Tom Rubens
The CBA commissioner actually answered the phone! They discussed the team and Tom's interest in purchasing it. He found someone that owned an expansion franchise. with $25,000 in his pocket, he was a bit short of the $375,000 price tag.
At the end of August, Tom had negotiated a down-payment of $25,000 with the balance to be paid by the end of April. tom managed to put together a group of investors and it turned out to be so successful, he continued with the business model.

132 : Joey Coleman - the First 100 Days
Monday Apr 02, 2018
Monday Apr 02, 2018
For over a decade, Joey Coleman has helped organizations retain their best customers and turn them into raving fans through his entertaining and actionable keynotes, workshops, and consulting projects. As a recognized expert in customer experience design and an award-winning speaker at national and international conferences, Joey specializes in creating unique, attention- grabbing customer experiences. He works with companies ranging from small start-ups, to mid-size businesses, to large Fortune 500s.
Joey’s First 100 Days® methodology helps fuel successful customer experience endeavors at companies and organizations around the world. It’s a system designed to dramatically increase your customer retention and, as a result, your bottom line.
Joey Coleman - Connecting with the Right Customers?
As a consumer, one of the first things Joey and most people look at when they goes to a website is price. How much is this going to cost? Guess what, if it’s out of your budget, it’s out of your budget. That’s ok, you have two choices, go find more money or go find someone else.
“What you get is what you see. There’s no secrets it’s all out there. The good the bad and the ugly and everything in between.” - Joey Coleman on speaking
Joey put on his website, this is what it costs to hire me to speak. He realized it might be out of some people’s budget. As much as he would like to connect with everyone, if someone is not going to be a good fit for his business, he doesn't want to waste his time or their time.
“If you really want to succeed, you have to be creating personal and emotional connections with your customers.” - Joey Coleman
An Aha Moment Born from Joey’s Undergrad Studies
Joey Coleman was running an ad agency and he was helping a client drive clients to a new area of their business and as quickly as they were bringing them in the front door, they were running out the back. He could get the phones to ring and get the customers to come but the client could not retain them for longer than an initial engagement. He discovered this was a pervasive problem across all industries. Somewhere between 20-70% of customers would leave before they reached the 100 day anniversary.
During undergrad studies, Joey took a class called ‘government and international relations’ where they focused on the president. Today, everyone focuses on the first 100 days of presidency in determining what the next 4 years are going to look like. The same holds true for business.
“There is nothing that will give you a better insight into a the lifetime value of a customer than the first 100 days. - Joey Coleman
Final Four
- What have you done differently in your life to stand out?
“I’ve always been willing to do the next thing. I didn’t leave a job because I hated it, I left it because I found a job that I loved more.”
- What advice would you give someone starting out in business?
“Trust your gut. Human beings are good and decent people who know what the right choice is.”
- The best advice you have ever received?
“My wife reminds me regularly that I need to sleep more. It’s a lot easier to be creative when you’ve had a good night’s sleep.”
- How do you want to be remembered?
“As somebody who always tried their best even if it didn’t work out. Be a good person who tried his best.”

131 : Robb Holman - Lead the Way to Better Leadership
Monday Mar 26, 2018
Monday Mar 26, 2018
Robb Holman is a life-long serial entrepreneur and the CEO of Holman International, a global leadership consultancy. He’s also the author of the best-selling book, Lead the Way. Today, Jesse and Robb talk leadership done differently.
“Light yourself on fire with passion and people will come from miles to watch you burn.” - Robb Holman
Robb Holman - What’s Firing Him Up?
Robb is a successful entrepreneur, speaker, coach, author and man of passion. His greatest passion is his family. Watching his wife and kids do what they love and being able to help and inspire them to do what they love, is what fires Robb up. The inspiration he gives to leaders is the same he gives to his family.
He doesn’t like to categorize his time. He doesn’t put on his work hat or his family hat. To Robb, that’s tiring and unhealthy and causes undue stress. He views his life as one wheel with many spokes. He is whoever he is wherever he goes. There’s an ease and expectancy to it. He’s free to be himself and feels liberating to Robb.
“Live a life of intentional gratitude.” - Robb Holman
Self-Discovery
Today so many people are into self-help they think if I could just be like this person or that person, I’d be a better me. Robb sees this as a fallacy and a huge waste of energy. Stop trying to make a better you or compare yourself to others. Robb challenges you to channel that energy into defining the seeds of greatness that are already in you. To Robb, this is what authenticity is really all about.
“We need to learn and be aware about the importance of going after the one.” - Robb Holman on focusing and being present
Final Four
- What have you done differently in your life to stand out?
“Live a passionate life. When you live a passionate life, you are going to catch other people on fire and allow them to live more passionate lives too.”
- What makes someone stand out in business or in life?
“Live a life of intentional gratitude. Have a positive attitude and outlook of yourself and others and of this world.”
- What’s the best advice you’ve received?
“You can only give when you got. Put yourself in a position to receive the good things in life the more of those powerful things you can give.”
- How do you want to be remembered?
“An individual who lived a life on purpose and helped others discover why they exist on the planet.”
